Smart locks and access control: homeowner options
Let the right people in, with controls you understand. Explore how keypad locks, guest permissions, intercoms and garage or gate access differ before selecting an installation provider.
Information for your next decision
This page explains options; it is not an offer of security installation or monitoring. Boston Smart House does not currently provide security-system installation, repair or maintenance. Engage an appropriately licensed provider directly.
Everyday entry
Make access fit the household.
PIN codes, smartphone access, NFC credentials and fingerprint readers are different ways to identify a user. Availability depends on the selected equipment. Consider everyday entry, a practical backup and who can grant or revoke access.
- Smart locks and keypad entry
- Temporary guest or tenant codes
- Remote unlock where supported
- Battery, power and manual backup questions
Shared properties
Be clear about permissions.
A rental, multi-family property or small business may need separate access groups and records. Discuss ownership, privacy, emergency egress and building requirements with the security professional and property decision-makers before choosing hardware.
- Guest and contractor permissions
- Access logs and retention settings
- Video intercom and doorbell options
- Tenant turnover and account handover
Garage and gates
Treat moving access equipment as its own project.
A garage opener or gate must retain its required safety behavior. Ask the appropriate provider to verify the equipment, obstruction protection and supported controls. Automation should not assume that location detection alone is permission to unlock a door.
- Garage and vehicle entry options
- Gate-control compatibility
- Explicit authorization for unlocking
- A documented fallback procedure
Questions before booking
Can you install my smart lock or intercom?
Our current offer does not include security or access-control installation, maintenance or monitoring. Use this guide to prepare for a directly engaged qualified security provider.
Where do alarms and sensors fit?
Door/window, motion, glass-break and panic devices belong in a security-provider assessment. Smoke and CO protection require the applicable life-safety professionals. Consumer automation does not replace those systems.
