Water leaks, freeze alerts and home-protection options
A useful alert needs a useful response. Explore the questions behind water, temperature and basement monitoring, especially when part of a home is used infrequently or left empty during a trip.
Information for your next decision
This page explains options; it is not an offer of security installation or monitoring. Boston Smart House does not currently provide security-system installation, repair or maintenance. Engage an appropriately licensed provider directly.
Water and temperature
Begin with the places you worry about.
A basement, laundry area, water heater or seldom-used room can have different monitoring needs. Ask the appropriate provider about sensor placement, expected alerts and how someone will respond when you are away.
- Water leak sensor locations
- Freeze and temperature alerts
- Basement and utility-area monitoring
- Humidity and air-quality information
From alert to action
Know what happens after a notification.
An automatic shutoff involves plumbing and must be suitable for the property. A phone alert depends on equipment, connectivity, power and someone noticing it. Ask who tests the system, maintains it and handles a suspected leak.
- Automatic water-shutoff questions
- Power and internet failure behavior
- Owner and backup-contact responsibilities
- Maintenance and testing arrangements
Safety systems
Keep required protection independent.
Consumer notifications should not be treated as a replacement for required smoke or CO alarms, inspections or an emergency plan. Security sensors and life-safety equipment need the applicable qualified providers and local requirements.
- Smoke and CO system questions
- Door/window and motion sensor options
- Required inspection responsibilities
- Clear distinction from monitored response
Questions before booking
Does a leak sensor prevent water damage?
It may provide information that helps someone respond, but no device guarantees that damage will be prevented. Placement, maintenance and response arrangements matter.
Can you install or monitor these systems?
This page is educational. We do not currently offer security or life-safety installation or monitoring, or water-shutoff plumbing. Engage the appropriate providers directly.
